There’s a Stumptown Coffee coming right around the corner, and Sonoratown is already winning awards and turning heads with their northern-Mexico style tacos from a tiny storefront on 8th Street. It’s also worth noting that, while the names are similar, this Santee Passage project is in no way connected to Santee Alley, a long-running outdoor bazaar in the same Fashion District area. HISTORY – From Fashion to Function

Business tycoon Michael J. Connell built downtown LA’s first garment and textile manufacturing building in 1911, launching a mini-construction boom that lasted through the 1930′s. The heavy, concrete-frame construction and ornamental facades of the early 20th century industrial era characterized the architecture. All of these buildings sat largely unappreciated for decades. In 1998, a decade-long process to restore and re-adapt them for loft living began. The Eckardt and the Cornell at Santee Village are two of those buildings that were designated as local historic monuments in 2001. The Textile Building is on 8th St.

The true loft units in the Eckardt, Cornell and Textile buildings at Santee Village reflect the historic look and feel of the fashion industry with oversized industrial windows, concrete floors and columns, high ceilings and lots of open space.
