Clifton’s Cafeteria Re-Opens in Downtown Los Angeles Historic Core

Eighty years after Clifford Clinton revolutionized dining, Clifton’s is once again open in the Historic Core after a massive remodel at 648 S. Broadway. The Los Angeles Times brings a behind-the-scenes look a the re-opening. It comes at a time when Broadway is rapidly being gentrified one building at a time.

Clifton’s Cafeteria has been an enjoyment of my family for more than 50 years.  I remember eating there as a child in the 1970’s.  The world’s largest cafeteria with a theme park style, similar to Knott’s Berry Farm Ghost Town, Log Ride/Calico Mine Ride style. The old building is a great example of the overall spirit of renovation, rebuilding and renewal of the Historic Core in Downtown Los Angeles as new residents and investors gain so much by revitalizing the old buildings with modern conveniences while keeping their original character and history.

Today, the Cafeteria has expanded it’s bar and night club feel while keeping much of the original theme.  I hear the prices have gone up (perhaps the food quality did not come up to match) but it may be a small price to pay for keeping and enjoying this L.A. landmark for decades to come.
