While many enjoy the occasional drive from Los Angeles to the mountains, charitable athlete Edmund Ortega usually prefers to ride his bike instead. For years, he biked all over L.A. to The Design Center, Alta Lofts, West Hollywood and Santa Monica. Today, Edmund Ortega holds the world record for total miles biked by an athlete over 50 years old. Recognized as the “10,000 Mile Man” for having completed that many miles in Big Bear in the year 2018, Edmund’s miles total overall more than 200,000, much of that accomplished on his 17-lb Trek Emonda 100% carbon fiber road bike. Known for his unstoppable enthusiasm, positive attitude and inspiring charisma, Edmund has been riding the Grizley 100 KM of mountain biking at up to 7,000 ft of elevation, Snow storms? Avalanches? What’s that? Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays this athlete from the swift completion of his charitable contributions. Winter, summer, spring or fall — he’s not deterred by ice or snow at all. Edmund regularly handles more than 8 inches without slowing down in a 125 mile road bike coarse in the mountains. No matter the height, his upbeat “No Sweat” attitude turns the tallest mountains into molehills. In June of 2015, Edmund rode a record climb to Big Bear totaling 155 miles at an elevation gain of 6,669 feet. #charities #dtla
Constantly helping others just comes naturally for him, so the charitable aspects of his excursions just sort of happened as the community rallied around him, encouraging and supporting his many lengthy rides. Edmund pursues his cycle endeavors for his own personal health and fitness, and hopes to inspire others to do the same, especially men over 50 like himself. He uses no steroids or artificial enhancements.
