The Lucky Month

All I can say is WOW! I am sitting here at my computer thinking of how grateful I am for the value so many, like you, bring to my real estate business, looking out my home office window and the skies are blue. Spring is here and we can be thankful of our wonderful Southern California weather.   |   Blog Video

For many across this great country it’s still freezing COLD and snowy! We in the Greater Los Angeles area never see a snowflake all winter long unless we decide to go skiing. It very well could be super stormy or drought dry today here (but it’s not). One thing is for sure, it’s a lucky month as stocks rebound and real estate stabilizes.  #coreychambers

Just like the weather seasons come and seasons go, so do the seasons of life. I’m sure you have noticed, as I have, the older I get the faster the seasons move by. These “seasons of life” go by so fast, my hope is that you enjoy each one or at least grow from each one. Yes. Some of life’s seasons will be HOT and others will be COLD, some high and some low. The lows we want to move by quickly, the highs we want to stay in forever.

Seasons of Life
Seasons of Life

So, what does this have to do with you or your home or real estate?

Well, spring is a time of action, people busy trying to get things done they could not do during the winter months. Sort of a renewing of the mind, spirit, of many things GOOD! Hopefully this special season will bring awesome happenings your way as your year unfolds. Wouldn’t it be great to simply just grab your favorite book along with your favorite lounge chair, set it right down in your favorite spot somewhere, outside or next to your window, while looking out on a beautiful Spring day and simply ‘RELAX”. Yea, that would be nice. My hope is that you will get to something like that on more than one occasion this Spring. Really enjoy the place you call home! The NEXT season will be here before you know it.

Unfortunately, there are some that will have a Spring Time they would much rather forget. Like it says in the Seasons of Life, with all the beauty this time of year brings, there is also the ugly for some. Just down the street from where I am typing this, Children’s Hosptial Los Angeles has a full house of kids fighting for their lives. For them and their families, the Ground Hog seeing or not seeing its shadow is the furthest thing from their mind. Don’t get me wrong, these families long to see their kids out in the yard playing or riding their bikes – but for now, they are praying this Spring will be a season of healing.

Your Referrals Help the Kids…

Why I Support Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles

I grew up right here in Los Angeles. Born right nearby at St. Francis Hospital. I remember when I first heard about a young person close to our family suffering from a nasty disease and getting treated for that at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. It was then that I began to pay closer attention to the work they do at that hospital. Since then, I have learned that it is a collection of hard working health care professionals, most making their home right here in the Los Angeles area, all coming together for a common cause. That cause is to help young people over come unfortunate health issues that life sometimes throws our way. Being a Los Angeles area, California native, I take pride in supporting in any way that I can the good work these people do at Children’s. My team rally’s around our annual goal of raising money and donating portions of our income to help Children’s in their quest to heal young people when they need healing. My team and I are committed to providing outstanding results for buyers and sellers referred to us by our past clients. I have discovered that Children’s Hospital Los Angeles shares similar commitments to their patients. And since their services survive on sponsorships and donations we are happy to contribute and proud to support them.

Sincerely,

Growing Up With a Heart Defect

By Marla Lehner

Geoffrey Von Der Ahe first came to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles when he was just 2 days old. Now age 18, he has no memory of undergoing lifesaving surgery, but his parents, Danielle and Geoff, remember it well. As new parents, they were overwhelmed by having a child with a serious heart condition, aortic stenosis, but they soon came to think of CHLA as their home away from home.

“When Geoffrey was born, we wondered, ‘What should we do? Where should we go?’” says Danielle. “Once we got to CHLA and experienced the level of care from the nurses and doctors, we knew it was the right place for us and the right place for Geoffrey.”

Geoffrey underwent a neonatal Ross procedure as an infant because of the severity of aortic valve stenosis. Over the years, Geoffrey regularly saw CHLA cardiologist Alan Lewis, MD, who monitored his condition. Children who have undergone a Ross procedure as neonates for aortic stenosis typically undergo at least three surgeries during their lifetime as their bodies grow and require larger valves. When he was 6, Geoffrey needed a second operation, which was performed by Vaughn Starnes, MD, co-Director of the Heart Institute, and the surgeon who had done the initial procedure.

As a teen, Geoffrey had a major growth spurt and noticed that he was getting tired more easily. After consulting with Dr. Lewis, it became clear that Geoffrey would need to have his pulmonary valve replaced again, and sooner rather than later. At age 15, Geoffrey underwent an interventional cardiology procedure to have a Melody Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve inserted.

This time, as a teenager spending time in the Heart Institute, Geoffrey’s experience was much different than when he was a child. Although he himself was recovering from an unexpected complication, Geoffrey couldn’t help but notice all the other younger patients around him. Hospitalization is never easy for anyone, let alone a small child. Geoffrey began to wonder how he could help other kids in the Heart Institute.

In his own words, Geoffrey shares what CHLA has meant to him and how his most recent experience at the hospital has given him a new sense of purpose:

What was it like being in the hospital as a teenager? How was it different than when you were a kid?

When I had surgery at 6 years old, I remember the staff was really comforting and that my parents tried to help me not be scared. After the surgery, the first thing I did was ask my dad if I could have a cheeseburger. When I was in the hospital at age 15, I started to really notice all the other kids around me. When I would walk down the hall, I’d see all these little babies with tubes who had just had surgery. There were also many other younger kids going through so much that I couldn’t even comprehend it.

What would you like to do to help other kids who have heart defects?

I want to spend some service time at CHLA. I also want to be able to talk to the parents and to be a mentor for the younger kids who are about to have surgery. I think a lot of the parents worry about how their kid will grow up. But when they see someone like me, who has a heart defect but is completely functioning, parents have told me it gives them hope. Over the past two years, I have been involved with Once Upon a Room, a nonprofit that decorates inpatient rooms at CHLA and many more hospitals. I am actually the president of the Orange County Junior Room Crew. There is nothing better than seeing the smiles that room decorations brings the patients. Hospital rooms can be so sterile, it’s amazing what some new bedding, wall decor and other decorations can do.

How has having a heart defect impacted your life?

My parents always told me it doesn’t have to affect my daily life. But it is a big part of my life because not a lot of people have gone through something like this so young. I kind of hold onto that because I think it’s pretty cool that I’ve been through something as serious as heart surgery.

Is it true that you’re thinking about going into medicine? Did your experience at CHLA influence that?

Yeah, I feel like I have such a connection to the medical field and it’s something I’m really interested in. The fact that you could be saving lives every single day is something I want to explore. Last summer, I participated in a premed program through University of California Irvine, and the experience was awesome. As of right now, I am deciding between becoming a researcher or becoming a practitioner.

What do you tell your friends about your condition and being treated at CHLA?

My friends are aware I’ve had surgery and are super supportive. But it’s hard to explain it to someone who hasn’t been through it, and it’s hard to fully explain how awesome CHLA is. But I want to give back as much as possible to the hospital that saved my life.

Pasadena Homes For Sale

PASADENA HOMES FOR SALE | FOR LEASE

Some residents of Downtown Los Angeles have moved to more suburban areas where they feel safer from car break-ins and other issues that are getting worse as the Los Angeles Police Department has stopped enforcing many laws across large sections Downtown Los Angeles. In addition to cleaner air, the metropolitan center of Pasadena has less than half as many reported crimes. #pasadena #homesforsale | Blog Video

While courts have previously determined that Skid Row is the only area where homeless may legally camp, LAPD has been allowing camping by anyone in many areas, including across the street from Little Tokyo Lofts and a block away from the Higgins Building. The lack of enforcement has encouraged a growth of up to ten times as many homeless and other campers. Home buyers and investors purchased properties in Downtown Los Angeles with expectations of the city center improving, but the opposite has happened. Many parts of Downtown have turned into tent cities with dozens of tents blocking sidewalks and interfering with pedestrian flow to local businesses.

Unlike DTLA, Pasadena has been going the right direction. Homelessness dropped 20% in Pasadena thanks to increased funding and robust law enforcement. The area has its share of homeless, but they are provided a more balanced combination of helpful services and policing. This results in a better tax base, lower overall crime, and better business in the Pasadena area. It’s no wonder that several Loft Blog readers have recently reported moving from Downtown L.A. to Pasadena.

Home of the Rose Bowl, Huntington Library, Norton Simon Museum, NASA JPL, Old Town Pasadena, City College, California Institute of Technology and Mission San Gabriel, the city has a great history and attractive reputation. Here’s a list of Pasadena Homes For Sale:
