Near Downtown Los Angeles, Highland Park Bowl, Highland Theatres and Debs Park are extraordinarily popular entertainment and recreation attractions. They exemplify a vibrant urban center that boasts plenty of outdoor fun. Highland Park is one of several up-and-coming neighborhoods that have been among L.A.s most pleasant communities for a hundred years.

Art Swing is one of several creative installations this week at Debs Park Audubon Center

This week, the Audubon Center at Debs Park is attracting lots of extra visitors with its art installations by unique artists such as Kate Lain. Pass through a doorway made of a floating fabric wall. On the fabric are cyanotypes, photographic traces of local native plants, dirt, water, and sunlight. The form of the installation suggests a familiar architectural form, a threshold between outside and in; however, the walls are porous and change in response to the environment around them. Notions of interior and exterior become blurry. So, perhaps do shelter and home. Kate Lain is a Pasadena-based multidisciplinary artist. Her work asks people to reconsider how they conceive of nature. The Arroyo Arts Collective 5-installation show Shelter is made possible in part through the generous support of the Audubon Center at Debs Park, Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. Pershing Square is a park and public gathering place in Downtown Los Angeles between the Financial District, Historic Core, Old Bank and Civic Center neighborhoods. #pershingsquare #dtla

One square block in size, the park is located at 5th Street and Hill Street, with 6th Street and Olive Street bounding the southwest corner. The compact, urban-style public outdoor space lies atop a large underground parking garage.

The Pershing Square Downtown Stage brings more than six weeks of free outdoor free music concerts, movies and special events. The place looks extra pretty around Christmas, nicely decorated with an outdoor ice skating rink and various seasonal events.

The park and surrounding neighborhoods support a dense population. Just blocks from Skid Row, a large number of homeless, mentally ill and struggling individuals wander and sleep around the venue. A Metro station is across the street on the southeast corner of Broadway and Hill St. Also across the street, a new Starbucks attracts coffee lovers, while a glamorous rooftop restaurant and lounge Perch serves French food, handcrafted cocktails with grand views of the city.
