Under construction at the site of what was a large parking lot between Downtown’s L.A. Live and the Financial District, Metropolis Los Angeles is finally being built after nearly 30 year of planning and re-planning. A combination condo tower and hotel tower, the project shares the concept of its neighbor, the Ritz-Carlton Residences at L.A. Live. L.A. Loft Blog readers will get first chance at an early viewing, and may request the new listings as soon as they are released. #metropolis #losangeles
The gigantic South Park mixed-use super-project Metropolis, which was delayed for decades, has finally come to fruition, just 30 days after beginning building on the project’s first phase, a 38-story luxury condominium tower and 19-story hotel, builders Greenland USA gave the announcement that they plan to start the second phase: two taller residential towers as soon as this fall.
Many are finding it hard to believe that the project has finally launched. The development that has been the subject of planning and announcements since the 1980s, and was starting to become a bit of a mockery of failed development, is suddenly proceeding at a fast pace. The new buildings in the project designed by Gensler will have a prominent place in the Downtown skyline. The tallest of the two buildings will rise 54 stories high with 740 condominium units. The other will be 40 stories with 510 condos.
The two shiny residential towers will have a modern glass-and-steel look as the first phase, but with more “detail and drama,” due to “large rectangular facade projections that frame the upper portions of the structures” and give the buildings a bold asymmetry. They will both stand on an eight-story mixed-use parking podium that will also bring retail stores to Francisco and Eighth Streets. The first phase is on schedule and expected to be finished over the next few months with units already on sale!
