Art in Downtown Los Angeles – Artist Yayoi Kusama Turns 90

Art News

Downtown Los Angeles  —  One of the most celebrated and attended artists of any Downtown L.A. art venue just turned 90 years old.

Yayoi Kusama is the Japanese contemporary artist best known for her works in sculpture, installation, pop and performance art. A prolific artist since the 1950s, she was also active in Warhol era pop and performance art of the 1960s.  Her fame arrived much later.

Kusama’s created the two most coveted art treasures of Downtown L.A.’s Broad Museum, Infinity Mirror Rooms: Infinity Mirrored Room—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away (2013) and Longing for Eternity, 2017. Each is accessible with free general admission. The exhibits usually require a 3 hour wait, so be sure to get your name on the list as soon as you enter the museum. Her exhibits have become a cultural phenomenon in Downtown Los Angeles.

Viewers enjoy being physically immersed in observing the reflections on its interior and exterior and peering through windows into the mirror room. These works complement each other, creating two distinct phenomenological experiences of boundlessness, and interior and exterior in dialogue with one another.

Kusama cites eternal unlimited universe, love for humanity, and longing for peace in the world, concepts become increasingly serious through the development of her philosophy of life and art. Her philosophy about the eternity of inter-relationships are integrated into her artworks.

Share the information after you create your own experience at the Broad.  Then, check out the cute (and powerful) little art store called Raw Materials.  It’s stocked with pretty much anything an artist will need: 436 S Main St.
