Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Birthday Today – Remembering Civil Rights and Fair Housing

Martin Luther King Jr Birth Home with King’s sister Christine Farris

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born January 15, 1929 at 501 Auburn Avenue, the home of his maternal grandparents. For the next twelve years he lived here with his grandparents, parents, siblings, other family members and boarders.

The home is an important memorial to the everyday people known as the “foot soldiers” of the Civil Rights Movement. Their willingness to stand before water hoses, risk police batons, and march was the force that led to the Movement’s success.

In 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts, and the Civil Rights Act was passed that year with new fair housing protections.  This was followed up with the Fair Housing Act in 1968, which enacted federal enforcement to protect against discrimination based on race, religion and national origin.

The LA Loft Blog today celebrates the non-violent civil rights movement, fair housing and equal opportunity.
