ROWAN: An L.A. INNOVATOR

lBuilt by famed real estate developer Robert A. Rowan and A.C. Bilicke, the building is located at the corner of Fifth and Spring Streets, a prime location in the midst of the flourishing business core, at one time known as “The Wall Street of the West.”

Designed by John Parkinson noted for his architecture of Los Angeles City Hall and The Pacific Stock Exchange and G. Edwin Bergstrom in 1911.  From 1905 to 1915 Bergstrom was in partnership with architect John Parkinson. The firm of Parkinson & Bergstrom designed the Los Angeles Athletic Club, the Alexandria Hotel, and the original building of Bullock’s Department Store.

The Rowan Building was formerly home to many of the city’s oldest and most prominent law offices and stock brokerage firms during the golden years of Los Angeles’ downtown area.

DEVELOPERS
Goodwin Gaw, developer of The Rowan and President of Downtown Properties united with Tom Gilmore, Partner at Gilmore Associates.  Gaw is famously known for his transformation of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel into a trend setting hotspot, and maintains a portfolio of historic properties nationally, including The Bradbury, One Bunker Hill, Douglas Building and 818 West 7th Street in Los Angeles.  Gilmore has acquired and rehabilitated historic properties in Downtown Los Angeles and Hollywood since the early 1990’s and is generally credited as the first developer to successfully utilize the adaptive re-use ordinance in Los Angeles. Under his direction the Old Bank District has been recreated as a truly exceptional Urban Living Environment.

Together, Gaw and Gilmore unlocked the potential that has lain dormant at The Rowan, reinventing the building as the paradigm of true city living.
